Mos-Quit-O: A Unique textile innovation

Bubblegum-0799439133945A blanket that effectively repels insects? Really? Is that even possible? Yes, in fact two Mumbai girls have devised a 100% cotton blanket that is not only 100% effective against mosquitoes but also odourfree, side effects-free and WHO-tested to be totally safe for infants and newborns.

The brainchild of Kasturi and Shreya Poddar, both second generation textile entrepreneur s, the Mos-Quit-O blanket fabric is embedded with a special formulation, Permethrin, a chemical compound which when inhaled by the mosquito affects his nervous system and repels it and significantly reduces biting activity.

If this is so easy, why hasn’t it been done before? Kasturi smiles and says, “That’s what I have been asking myself. The truth is I came across this information while doing research for some textile innovations I was attempting. It was totally a Eureka moment. Permethrin has been known to be used as a treatment on American army uniforms for decades to repel insects on the battlefields. Our research and trials have been able to safely adapt this technique for domestic use. Mos-Quit-O is patent pending.”

Kasturi and Shreya were covered in HT Brunch for their amazing concept. Nidra Home’s research has tested the blanket for effectiveness upto 50 washes, which means if you wash your blanket once a month, it will continue to repel mosquitoes for more than 4 years. One can wash it like any other material in the washing machine. “We have tried to keep the maintenance as simple as possible. Use it everyday, wash it once a month. Easy to use and last much longer than any plug-in or mosquito coil,” says Shreya.

Although priced at a significant Rs 1999/-, Mos-Quit-O is selling like hot cakes in most markets with mosquito  breeding issues. Sales in Mumbai’s far-flung suburbs like Navi Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Bangalore are picking up by word-of-mouth. “The sales have been encouraging. Looking at the response and impact, we are also testing nightwear and other home linen that can be treated for other household bugs as well. Our tests and trials are on,” signs off Kasturi.
